The Matthias Church as known as The Coronating Church of the Buda Castle, is an art relic church with a great historical past located in the 1. district, at the Square of the Holy Trinity. The church is the earliest and most complete creation of the Hungarian classical gothic architecture.


According to the ecclesiastical tradition the church was founded by King I. Stephen in 1015. The church reached its present mass after its gothical reconstruction in the 14th and 15th century. In the 19th century there was a huge reconstruction again, which effected the present form of the church, and resulted the nicect work of our neo-gothic architecture with its beautiful  enterior which is one of the top creation of the
European Art Nouveau.

In the II. World War during the siege of Budapest in 1944-45 the church was seriously damaged. The damages were repaired by the Hungarian state between 1950 and 1970.
